PROJECT / CLIENT DESCRIPTION

MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal is formerly known as Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal or Rip Curl Pro Portugal is a professional surfing competition of the WSL World Tour held every year in October at the Supertubos beach in Peniche, Portugal. The event holds an important economic role for the whole municipality of Peniche, as most people in this city depend on tourism and related content. Tens of thousands of visitors flock to this town during the event to see the finest surfers in the world live, have fun in the evening, and eat something delicious.

Because the ocean and waves are unpredictable there is a waiting period every year that lasts two weeks. They wait for the best surf forecast and the competition itself could last just three days (everything depends on the conditions in the water). Even though in the waiting period there is no surf competition, there are events and parties that people can attend, but the majority of the users stay in Peniche just on the days when the competition is on.

MY ROLE – UX, UI

CHALLENGE, PROCESS
& SOLUTION

I think that good navigation, like a good design, is invisible. Helping users to understand navigation was my biggest concern. The more natural it is for people to use and navigate a product the more likely they will be using it. This app works in parallel with the WSL app but is focused on side events, activities and sightseeing. I want to present the user with different options in certain places – in this case, Peniche city with surroundings. The app does not include eating and sleeping options, because I think that users already have very strong applications for these areas (Booking, Trip Advisor). Parallel app can be useful for local people and tourists – people who do not know much about that place.

PERSONAS

Based on my user research I created three personas that together represent the majority of potential app users. I defined what are each person’s goals and expectations for the event, who he/she is, what are his/her hobbies and what apps he/she uses. App’s personas are:

  • a local surfer from Portugal who has attended competition few times before
  • a student from abroad who doesn’t know Peniche well and likes to have fun
  • an active mother who is a travel and sport’s enthusiast and likes to spend time with her family

WHAT I LEARNED &
SKILLS I GAINED

During this proposal project I learned about user experience and interface. I learned about UX process, how it works and furthermore: how to use it. For my main work-tool I used program called InVision (have to say that I prefer Figma or Adobe XD). With Parallel project I gained experience in app design as well.
